Etymology[edit]

Probably a Tai-Kadai substrate word (Li, 1990). Compare Zhuang ngamq (just; exactly; only).

Alternatively, some postulate that this is derived from (hap1, “just; coincidentally; suitable”) or (am1, “to know; familiar with”).

Pronunciation[edit]

Note: The zero initial /∅-/ is commonly pronounced with a ng-initial /ŋ-/ in some varieties of Cantonese, including Hong Kong Cantonese.
