The name is derived from combining Shi Huangdi's (ancestral name) and (given name) in the manner of modern Chinese. Although common within China today, the name would have been unusual at the time, when the custom was to treat the , (clan name), and separately; to refer to high-ranking men by their titles and regnal or posthumous names; or to combine the clan name and the given name (Zhao Zheng).
