Usage notes[edit]

This term is also used to refer to female teachers, while the term 師母师母 (shīmǔ) refers specifically to a male teacher's wife, and not to female teachers. Usually, 師父师父 (shīfu) is used to refer to martial arts teachers and Buddhist monks or nuns, while 師傅师傅 (shīfu) is used to refer to a master or teacher of a trade.
