Etymology[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *baːŋ, *baŋ): semantic  ‎(door) + phonetic  ‎(OC *paŋ, *baŋ). Also Ideogrammic compound (會意):  ‎(door) +  (homonym of , "side"), as it originally referred to one of the two rooms beside the central room.
