Etymology
[edit]Compound of 提灯 (chōchin, “paper lantern”) + 鮟鱇 (ankō, “anglerfish”),[1][2][3] from the way that this particular kind of anglerfish's bioluminescent lure looks a bit like a traditional Japanese paper lantern with streamers.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]提灯鮟鱇 • (chōchin ankō) ←ちやうちんあんかう (tyautin'ankau)?
Usage notes
[edit]As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary), as チョウチンアンコウ (chōchin ankō).
