Etymology[edit]

Compound of 生け (ike, making something come alive, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb 生ける (ikeru, to make something live)) +‎ (hana, flower).[1][2][3] The hana changes to bana as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
