Japanese[edit]

Kanji in this term
あお
Grade: 1
kun’yomi

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Japonic *awo.[1]

Possibly suffixed form, with adjectival *-ki1, of Old Japanese awo-[2].

The medial voiceless plosive /-k-/ underwent voicing, then affrication, and gliding, before being dropped; before /-i, -u, -e, -o/.[3] As this sound-change did not occur before /-a/, Middle Japanese /akaki/ became /akai/ 赤い.

⟨awoki1 → */awokʲi/ → */awogʲi/ → */awoɣi/ → */awoji/ → */awoi//aoi/
