Compound of 鳴門 (naruto, a noisy strait or narrows where the rushing of the tides causes noisy whirlpools) +‎ 巻き (maki, winding; spiral), for the way the spiral pattern in the kamaboko resembles a whirlpool.[1][2]

  1. A type of 蒲鉾 (kamaboko, fishcake) that is white on the outside with a pink spiral pattern on the inside. Prepared in loaves or rolls, then sliced and added to dishes as a garnish.
