Etymology[edit]
The origin is uncertain. Possibilities include:
- Might be cognate with Goguryeo 忽 (*kuru, “town”), compare Jurchen (*guru-un, “country”), Manchu ᡤᡠᡵᡠᠨ (gurun, “country”) and Japanese 国 (kuni, “country”).
- Might be cognate with Korean 구리 (guri, “copper”), compare Mongolian ᠭᠠᠤᠯᠢ (ɣauli, “brass”).
