는다 (-neunda)

  1. A suffix in the "plain" speech level, ubiquitous in literature but less common nowadays in Seoul speech:
    1. The present-tense declarative suffix.
      요리사 잡채 접시 는다.
      yorisa-ga japchae-reul jeopsi-e damneunda.
      The cook is putting japchae on a plate.
      영화 보러 간다.
      Yeonghwa-reul boreo ganda.
      I go watch a movie.
    2. A monologic interrogative suffix; usually used with interrogative words.
      오늘저녁 는다...?
      oneureun jeonyeoge mwol meongneunda...?
      What should I have for dinner today...?
      쩐다...?
      I don-eul eojjeonda...?
      What do I do with this money...?

Usage notes[edit]

  • This suffix causes stem-final (l) to drop out.
