Korean

Etymology

Of native Korean origin. The original etymology originated from the word "밥보 (bapbo)," which means eating a lot of rice(food), and the origin of the meaning fool comes from the fact that people with intellectual disabilities only eat. This word was born by removing the (b) 받침 (batchim) from (bap) + (bo)

Pronunciation

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈpa̠(ː)bo̞]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
