Etymology

[edit]

First attested as Middle Korean 브ᅀᅥᆸ (pùzèp) in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례)[1], 1446. Also attested as Middle Korean 브ᅀᅥᆨ (pùzèk) in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 22:50b[2], 1481. See the Middle Korean entries for more information.

This form reflects the regular lenition /s > z > Ø/ in the central dialect. Compare e.g. Jeju 부섭 (buseop, furnace) and Gyeongsang Korean 부섴 (buseok, furnace; kitchen), both preserving the medial consonant.
