Compound of 코 길— (ko gil-, “nose is long”) + 이 (-i, noun-deriving suffix).
First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 고〮키리〮 (Yale: kwókhìlí).
