[edit]Inherited from Proto-Middle Indo-Aryan *𑀨𑀺𑀭𑀢𑀺 (*phirati), possibly from Sanskrit स्पृ (spṛ).
Compare Late Sanskrit फलति (phalati), फेलति (phelati, “goes”), whose root, फेल् (phel), is unmentioned in etymological dictionaries. Possibly from the Sanskrit root स्पृ (spṛ, “to release”), or otherwise related to Persian سپردن (separdan, “to traverse”).
