Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *míḱtis, from the root *meyḱ- ~ *meyǵ- (to mix) +‎ *-tis.[1] Cognate with Lithuanian mìšti, Avestan 𐬨𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬌 (mišti). Compare μίγνυμι (mígnumi, I mix), from the same root.
