From Proto-Indo-European *gʰrómos (a roar, rumble; thunder), the same root of χρόμαδος (khrómados, crash, fragor), χρεμετίζω (khremetízō, to whinny, neigh), χρέμπτομαι (khrémptomai, to clear one's throat), Proto-Germanic *grimmaz (grim, fierce) and Proto-Slavic *gromъ (thunder).
