Glyph origin[edit]

Originally written . Now phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *ŋads) and ideogrammic compound (會意): phonetic (OC *ŋads, to mow) + semantic (knife).

Etymology 1[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-ŋa-p (to mow, cut, reap) (STEDT, Schuessler, 2007).

Cognate with Tibetan [script needed] (rŋa-ba), [script needed] (brŋas), and colloquial West Tibetan [script needed] (rŋab-ba), which Coblin (1986) and STEDT treat as more conservative.
