[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese -avel, from Latin -ābilis. Compare -able dialectally and in various other languages; e.g. Sicilian -àvili, for a similar morphology.

Usage notes
[edit]- This suffix is generally appended to 1st-conjugation verb stems and, in some cases, to Latin stems.
- Some words ending in -ável are directly descended from Latin instead of being formed from a stem and a suffix.
