Etymology

[edit]

From Old Galician-Portuguese -avel, from Latin -ābilis. Compare -able dialectally and in various other languages; e.g. Sicilian -àvili, for a similar morphology.

    [edit]

    • Rhymes: (Brazil) -avew, (Portugal) -avɛl
    • Hyphenation: -á‧vel

    Suffix

    [edit]

-ável m or f (adjective-forming suffix, plural -áveis)

    1. -able
      cantar (to sing) + ‎-ável → ‎cantável (singable)
      aumentar (to increase) + ‎-ável → ‎aumentável (increasable)

    Usage notes

    [edit]
    • This suffix is generally appended to 1st-conjugation verb stems and, in some cases, to Latin stems.
    • Some words ending in -ável are directly descended from Latin instead of being formed from a stem and a suffix.
