Etymology[edit]
From Latin -īna and its derived forms in other European languages, such as Danish -ine, present in many borrowed names and subsequently used independently to form new Icelandic names.

- Forms female given names, usually from male given names, e.g. Gíslína from Gísli, Sæmundína from Sæmundur, but sometimes from other names, e.g. Mýrdalína from Mýrdalur, a place name.
- (humorous) Forms nouns descriptive of women, e.g. óléttína (“pregnant woman”) from óléttur (“pregnant”).
