Usage notes[edit]

  • Comes in both stressed and unstressed variants. The above declension tables show the unstressed variants; the stressed variants are identical except for the stress on -и́ще.
  • When added to reducible nouns, it is added onto the reduced stem of the noun (for masculine reducible nouns, found everywhere but in the nominative singular).
  • Triggers the Slavic first palatalization when added to nouns and verbs whose stem ends in a velar (к г х) or in ц.
  • Augmentatives of inanimate masculine nouns can be either neuter or masculine. Most such masculine augmentatives have an optional plural in -и; some have a required plural in -и.
  • Augmentatives or animate masculine nouns are generally masculine animate. Such nouns have a required plural in -и and have alternative colloquial forms in the singular with feminine endings.
