From Middle Iranian -pān ‎(-keeper). Compare Middle Persian pʾn' ‎(-bān, -keeper, -guard), Persian بان ‎(-bān, -keeper). Found in many Iranian borrowings: բարապան ‎(barapan), պաշտպան ‎(paštpan), դաստապան ‎(dastapan), etc. See also -պանակ ‎(-panak).
