From Middle Iranian -pān (-keeper). Compare Middle Persian pʾn' (-bān, -keeper, -guard), Persian بان (-bān, -keeper). Found in many Iranian borrowings: բարապան (barapan), պաշտպան (paštpan), դաստապան (dastapan), etc. See also -պանակ (-panak).
