Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *-dáH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *-dáH (also found in Avestan -𐬛𐬁 (-dā)), of uncertain origin. Compare Ancient Greek -δᾱ (-dā), -δην (-dēn, forming adverbs), perhaps for Proto-Indo-European *-déh₂ (less likely *-déh₁), which may be an extension of *(-)de (“to, towards; from, of; in, at”). Relation to Balto-Slavic suffixes such as Lithuanian -adà is disputed.

Pronunciation
[edit]Suffix
[edit]-दा • (-dā́)
- forms adverbs of time, almost only from pronominal stems
