A (upper case, lower case a)
- (sometimes with littera) The first letter of the Latin alphabet, written in the Latin script.
Usage notes
- In compound words, long ā generally remains unchanged (lābor, dēlābor). In a non-initial syllable, short ă is changed by vowel reduction into short ĭ or short ĕ (tangō, contingō; capiō, concipiō, conceptum). It remains unchanged in cases in which the word was coined later on: amō, adamō; patiēns, impatiēns.
