Etymology[edit]
From Latin Alexandretta and Byzantine Greek Ἀλεξανδρέττα (Alexandrétta), from Alexandria + -etta (“-ette: forming diminutives”), from Ancient Greek Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexándreia, “Alexandria”), from Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros, “Alexander”) + -ειᾰ (-eia, “-ia: forming place names”). Equivalent to Alexandria + -etta. Doublet of Alexandria, Iskenderun, Kandahar, and Scandaroon.
