From Proto-Germanic *glīdaną, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰl̥eydʰ- (to glide), from zero-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰel- (to shine) + *-eidʰ-. Cognate with Old Saxon glīdan, Old High German glītan (to glide), Old English glīdan (to glide).
