From Proto-Germanic *grētaną ‎(to weep, cry), from Proto-Indo-European *gr̥h₂-, zero-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *gerh₂- ‎(to weep). Cognate with Old Saxon grātan, Old High German grāzan, Old English grǣtan ‎(to weep, lament).
