From Proto-Germanic *mōtaną, from Proto-Indo-European *mōd- ‎(to permit, make able), lengthened o-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *med- ‎(to measure, give advice, heal). Cognate with Old Saxon mōtan ‎(to may, must), Old High German muozan ‎(to be allowed, may, must), Old English mōtan ‎(to may, must).
