From Proto-Indo-European *mh₂ḱwos, from *meh₂ḱ- ‎(to raise, grow). Cognate with Latin macer ‎(lean, thin), Ancient Greek μακρός ‎(makrós, long, tall), Proto-Germanic *magraz ‎(lean, meager).
