Etymology[edit]

Akin to Proto-Samic *përkëtēk (to work), both possibly borrowings from Proto-Germanic *wurkijaną. The substitution *w → *p would be for phonotactic reasons.

Verb[edit]

*pürkidäk (stem *pürki-)

  1. to strive for, to endeavor
  2. to tend to do

Inflection[edit]

Descendants[edit]

  • Finnish: pyrkiä
    • Estonian: → pürgima (to grub, to penetrate into)
  • Ingrian: pyrkiä
  • Karelian: pyrkie
  • Ludian: pür'gittädä (to ask for something)
  • Votic: pürtšiä
