From Proto-Indo-European *h₁élḱis, *h₁ólḱis ‎(elk). Cognate with Lithuanian elnias ‎(deer, stag, hart), Russian оле́нь ‎(olénʹ, deer), Russian лось ‎(losʹ, elk), Ancient Greek ἔλαφος ‎(élaphos, deer), Old Armenian եղն ‎(ełn, hind).
