From Proto-Indo-European *h₂énh₂t- ‎(duck). Cognate with Latin anas ‎(duck, drake), Lithuanian ántis ‎(duck, mallard), Proto-Slavic *ǫty ‎(duck) and possibly Old Armenian անիդ ‎(anid).
