From an earlier *bōkō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂ǵos (beech). The Indo-European root is also the source of Ancient Greek φηγός (phēgos, oak), Latin fāgus (beech) and Armenian բոխի (boxi, hornbeam).
