Etymology[edit]

Sense of "bind, stretch" from *bandiz, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰendʰ- (to tie, bind). Sense of "bend, inflect" (Old Norse and Old English only) is probably derived from the act of bending a bow in order to bind it.[1]
