From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰengʰ- (to walk, step). Cognate with Sanskrit जंगहे (jaṃgahe) (third-person singular intensive form of जंहति (jaṃhati, to move quickly, sprawl, kick)) and Lithuanian žeñgti (to step).
