Origin uncertain. Possibly from Pre-Germanic *gʰrubʰos, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrewbʰ-. Related to Lithuanian grubus (rough), Serbo-Croatian grȗb (rough, coarse).

Alternatively from *ga- +‎ *hrubaz, related to Proto-Germanic *hreubaz (scabby, rough).
