From Pre-Germanic *kudnéh₂-, a zero-grade iterative to Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewd- (to advance, push). Related to Sanskrit चोदति (codati, to urge, impel, incite).

The original paradigm consisted of two stem variants, singular *hutt- against non-singular *hut-.
