From *mihsk-, an ablaut variant of *mīhsk-, from base *mīk-, from Proto-Indo-European *meyǵ-, *meyḱ- ‎(to mix, knead). Cognate with *maikskaz, *maikskō ‎(mixture), Latin misceō ‎(mix, verb), Old Irish mescad ‎(mix, verb), Ancient Greek μίσγω ‎(mísgō, to mix), Sanskrit मेक्षयति ‎(mekṣáyati, to mingle, mix).
