From Proto-Indo-European *stāl- ‎(frame, rack, stand). Cognate with Lithuanian stalas ‎(table), Russian стол ‎(stol, table), Ancient Greek στήλη ‎(stḗlē, sile, pillar), Lithuanian pastoliai ‎(scaffolding).
