Etymology[edit]

From earlier *čьrxnъ ~← *kьrsnъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kirsnos (Derksen) or *kirsnas (author?), from Proto-Indo-European *kr̥s-nós (black). Morphologically *čьr- +‎ *-nъ.

Cognate with Lithuanian kir̃snas (black), Old Prussian kirsnan (black), Sanskrit कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa, black)
