Etymology[edit]

Possibly calque of Iranian (cp. Old Median Bagadāta- (god-given, given by god) ) or calque of Ancient Greek Θεόδοτος (Theódotos, literally given by God) or Ancient Greek Θεόδωρος (Theódōros, Theodore, literally gift of God). Morphologically from *bogъ (god) +‎ *danъ (given), the passive participle of *dati (to give).
