Proto-Slavic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *óʔgaʔ. Cognate with Lithuanian úoga and Latvian oga.

Further, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ogeh₂-, whence probably also Gothic 𐌰𐌺𐍂𐌰𐌽 ‎(akran, fruit), and possibly Tocharian B oko ‎(fruit, effect).

Has been connected to Old Irish áirne ‎(sloe, fruit of a blackthorn) and Welsh eirin ‎(plums), but these may also reflect *h₂eǵros ‎(field).
