From Proto-Balto-Slavic *trozdós, from Proto-Indo-European *trosdos. Balto-Slavic cognates include Lithuanian strãzdas, Latvian strazds and Old Prussian tresde. Indo-European cognates include Latin turdus, Old Irish truit and Old Norse þrǫstr.
