Etymology[edit]

Possibly related to Proto-Indo-European *h₃eh₁ḱus(swift, fast) (also reconstructed as *h₁oh₁ḱus) + the zero form *ptr-(wing), whence also Ancient Greek ὠκύπτεροσ(ōkúpteros, swift-winged (hawk or falcon)), Latin accipiter(hawk), and from the first word in the compound, Sanskrit आशु(āśu), Latin ocior and Ancient Greek ὠκύς(ōkús). Formed with the suffix found in other bird names, compare *golǫbь(pigeon).
