From *pa- +‎ *mętь. *mętь is from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mintis, from Proto-Indo-European *méntis (with generalization of the oblique stem *mn̥t-), cognate with Sanskrit मति (matí, máti), Latin mēns (genitive mentis), English mind.
