Etymology[edit]

From Latin aristolochia, from Ancient Greek ἀριστολόχεια (aristolókheia), from ἄριστος (áristos, best) + λοχεία (lokheía, childbirth, childbed). In ancient times the plant was thought to be effective against infections caused by childbirth.
