Etymology

Borrowed from Middle Dutch Boompjes Hoeck (modern Dutch Boompjes Hoek, literally Little-tree Hook). Spelling influenced by, and thus remodeled after, Bombay (historical name of Mumbai) +‎ hook (a curve), and thus also inadvertently a partial calque from Middle Dutch.
