Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as bonfurt and bonewirt in 825-842, attested with certainty as brunnenuurt in 944. Borrowed from West Frisian Boarnwert, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian brun (source, small watercourse) and uurt (terp, artificial mound used for habitation).
