Etymology[edit]
First attested as in brakkinghem in the late 10th century. Originally a compound of Old Dutch Brakko (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- and heem (“home, settlement”). The second element was gradually replaced with kamp (“enclosed piece of land”). Compare Denekamp, Greffelkamp, Gölenkamp, Haftenkamp and Höcklenkamp.
