Bad entry title. Mglovesfun (talk) 21:55, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rename to Category:Football --Vahagn Petrosyan 22:52, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Is the issue here with this and Category:Football (American) on how to clarify which is soccer (which some people call football) and which is football (what everybody else calls football)? --Yair rand 22:56, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agree - rename. And rename the other one Category:American Football. SemperBlotto 22:58, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wouldn't it make more sense to rename this Category:Soccer and the other one Category:American football, for them to be unambiguous? --Yair rand 23:01, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah support what Yair just said. Mglovesfun (talk) 23:02, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Soccer is too Americanocentric. No one uses it but you. --Vahagn Petrosyan 23:43, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not exactly. Canadians also say soccer. --Yair rand 23:48, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And neither Canadians nor you can play football or care about it. It wouldn't be fair if we chose the American name for the category. --Vahagn Petrosyan 23:53, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
On Wikipedia they renamed it to "Association football" which for someone who's lived all his life in England (apart from the last six months) association football sounds like a gambling ring. Mglovesfun (talk) 00:48, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW, I’m British, yet I think that renaming this to Category:Soccer, the other to Category:American football, and having Category:Football as a supercategory for the two is what makes most sense.  (u):Raifʻhār (t):Doremítzwr﴿ 01:10, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Category:Soccer" is useful as a redirect to whatever the final name for the topic category is. Category:American football is absolutely meaningless -- to (US) Americans. Category:Football (American) subordinates the distinction but makes it. All the games that Americans call football and the games that other English-speaking nations call football should appear adjacent to "Football" on any listings. DCDuring TALK 01:54, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with DCDuring. Unless the non-North Americans can come up with a name they all agree on for football (as in soccer) besides "Football", then "Football (Soccer)" should stay. It is a small concession to Americans and Canadians - who could then use "Football (US)" or "Football (American)", also "Football (Canadian)" (which is similar to US but has important differences including terms, and maybe even "Football (North American)". But you can't actually redirect a category. We don't have that capability, and never have. --EncycloPetey 17:07, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Everyone's local name is only meaningful in their local context. Call them gridiron football and soccer, and everyone will know what they mean. I don't think Association football is the game, but a particular set of rules, just like NFL football and CFL football (the US and Canadian leagues and rule sets, respectively).

If this is a thematic category, then don't lump them together under Football, because these are two distinct games, not two kinds of some common football (wouldn't that be a game?!). Michael Z. 2010-03-24 05:09 z

This conversation has been dead for some time with no consensus about what to do. I'm striking it as kept.—msh210 (talk) 16:28, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
