First attested in Ptolemy's Geographia. Derived from Greek Καττίγαρα (Kattígara), from Sanskrit कीर्ति- नगर (kīrti- nagara, Renowned City) or Sanskrit कोटि-नगर (koṭi-nagara, Strong City).
